Assemblymember Parra Celebrates Passage Of Allensworth Resolution

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Nicole Parra (D-Hanford) announces the passage of Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 97, recognizing and celebrating the centennial of the town of Allensworth in Tulare County.  The Allensworth resolution was co-authored by the California Legislative Black Caucus, Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and Senate President Pro Tempore Don Perata.

“The town of Allensworth, located in my district in Tulare County, was a visionary settlement established and operated by African Americans in 1908,” stated Assemblymember Parra.  “Allensworth was a community developed as a community devoted to civic engagement, culture and ideals.   It was established as a place where African Americans could thrive economically and socially.  I am proud to represent the people and the place today.”

This resolution commemorates the centennial of the founding of the town of Allensworth.  The story of Allensworth is inspiring, truly a story of the "American Dream," when a number of African-Americans, including Civil War heroes and ex-slaves, came to an isolated spot in the southern San Joaquin Valley to build a town where hard work, dedication, and faith would allow them the opportunity to control their own destiny in a discrimination-free environment. Allensworth is also the site of Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park.

The Centennial celebration of the town of Allensworth includes an exhibit and film in the State Capitol.  The exhibit will travel throughout the State later this year, eventually arrived at the town of Allensworth.  The exhibit is a poignant reflection of Colonel Allensworth, his dreams, and past 100 years of the town, that bears his name.  The exhibit is sponsored by the California Legislative Black Caucus, in partnership with the California State Parks, the California African-American Museum, and the California Community Empowerment Foundation.
