Parra Bills Clear Assembly

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Nicole Parra (D-Hanford) announced the passage of two pieces of legislation out of the Assembly this week.  Both AB 441 and AB 994 passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support and now head to the State Senate.

“With support of the local law enforcement community, I introduced AB 441 to help shut the revolving door of methamphetamine pushers in our neighborhoods.  I want to make sure they do some time in jail before rejoining our community,” said Assemblymember Parra.  “AB 994 ensures that the label ‘Made in California’ means something special again.  Our state’s leading wood products industry should be given preference when they meet or exceed all qualifications in the bidding process.  I now look forward to working with the Senate to get these bills to the Governor’s desk.”

AB 441 will ensure persons convicted of the sale of methamphetamine, who are granted probation, will serve at least 120 days in the county jail.  Despite continuous efforts to reduce and eliminate the resulting issues created by the methamphetamine epidemic, California and the Central Valley, in particular, continue to suffer from the effects of this awful and addictive drug. The Corcoran Police Department and Kings County District Attorney’s Office estimate approximately 75% of the crimes they address on a daily basis have a connection to the use, sale, or transportation of methamphetamine.

AB 994 would establish a state purchase preference for solid wood products originating from California’s forests.  As the State embarks on the implementation of landmark legislation for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, wood grown in California can help the State meet its climate change reduction goals.
