SACRAMENTO – In this week’s Democratic weekly radio address, Assemblymembers Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco) and Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) encourage the governor to sign AB 1108, a bill that would ban the use of a class of cancer-causing toxic chemicals in children’s products.

Hello, this is Fiona Ma, Majority Whip of the California Assembly.

Could babies who suck on their rubber duckies be susceptible to early onset puberty, disruption in their hormone systems, and cancer?

The scientific research and the recent recalls of millions of toys from China suggest so.

Phthalates are chemicals used as a softening agents in plastic toys like teethers and bath books.

The European Union and 14 other countries -- including Canada and Mexico -- have already banned or are fazing them out of toys.

But unfortunately, toys containing unhealthy levels of phthalates are openly sold in California.

The chemical industry likes to tell regulators and policy makers that the science on the phthalates is inconclusive, but while the industry has the power of money to spread propaganda, we have the science.

In fact, earlier this year, at the International Conference on Fetal Programming and Development Toxicity, 200 scientists urged policy makers not to wait any longer to take action on phthalates.

That’s why I authored Assembly Bill 1108, which will prohibit the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of toys and child care products intended for use by children under the age of three that contain certain phthalates.

AB 1108, a bill backed by consumer groups, cancer prevention groups, and environmental advocates, has already cleared the Assembly and Senate and now sits on the Governor’s desk for consideration.

But the bill has been under intense lobbying pressure from the chemical industry.

It is important that the Governor hear from you so California will no longer be the dumping ground for toxic toys.

Qué tal, les habla la asambleísta Anna Caballero. 

¿Sabía usted que su hijo puede enfermarse de cáncer, o tener una pubertad temprana por chupar un juguete de goma? 

Estudios científicos sugieren que esto podría pasar, si su bebe es expuesto a los químicos llamados ftalatos. Los ftalatos es un grupo de compuestos químicos usados para incrementar la flexibilidad del plástico y que se encuentran comúnmente en los chupetes y los libros de tinas.

México, Canadá, y  la Unión Europea en conjunto con otros 14 países alrededor del mundo han prohibido el uso de estos químicos en los juguetes.

Pero muchos juguetes con niveles peligrosos de ftalato, todavía son vendidos en California. 

La industria química niega que los ftalatos sean un problema.  La industria química tiene el poder del dinero para divulgar su propaganda – pero nosotros tenemos la ciencia.

Como un hecho, a comienzos de este año, en la Conferencia Internacional sobre la Programación Fetal y el Desarrollo Toxico, 200 científicos instaron a los políticos a tomar acciones sobre los ftalatos inmediatamente.

Esta fue la razón porqué la legislatura de California aprobó la medida AB 1108. 

Esta medida prohibirá a la industria de artículos para niños, a vender, y distribuir juguetes y productos para niños que contengan ciertos ftalatos, si es que estos fueron diseñados para el uso de menores de 3 años. 

La medida AB 1108 cuenta con el respaldo de grupos de defensa del consumidor, prevención del cáncer, y del medio ambiente. 

Pero la medida estuvo bajo intensa presión de parte de los líderes de la industria química. 

Es por eso que es importante que el gobernador escuche a la gente como usted para que sepa que California no puede ser el basurero de los juguetes tóxicos.
