Call the Governor and Senate Republicans, Demand Responsible Action
(Sacramento) – California’s cash crisis requires immediate, bipartisan action. Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) says while Democrats and Republicans in the Assembly worked together, taking bipartisan action to keep the state from paying its July bills with IOUs, the Governor and Senate Republicans blocked the effort with their “my way or the highway” attitude threatening to force the state to the brink of bankruptcy. Assemblymember Caballero says it’s time for all Californians to call, write and e-mail the Governor and Senate Republicans and tell them their refusal to accept the bipartisan package of cash solutions is “reckless” and “irresponsible”.
Caballero Releases a Statement Regarding the State Budget Crisis
Sacramento - Assemblywoman Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) Chair of Local Government and Member of the Budget Committee made the following statement regarding the Budget Crisis:
“The State Controller, John Chiang has said that IOU’s will be issued to pay for state debts, if a budget agreement is not reached by next week. The Assembly has taken this crisis seriously and yesterday voted and passed by the requisite 2/3’s vote three bills that would save the state over $5 billion to help California avoid a cash crisis. Assembly Republicans and Democrats in unprecedented accord put aside partisan politics and voted to compromise. Moderates from both parties have been advocating for more dialogue and compromise to get the budget balanced, and that work continues.
Unfortunately in the Senate there was no compromise. The two Republican Senators that represent Monterey County refused to vote for the bills. If you are concerned and don’t want to see the State issue IOU’s please call your Senator and let them know that you expect them to compromise. The states fiscal solvency is at stake. The time to act is now.”
Building Better Farm Worker Housing
(Sacramento) – The California State Assembly is considering legislation from Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) that will increase the options to create more farm worker housing. Specifically, Assembly Bill 494 creates a narrow, specific exception under the Williamson Act, which governs the use of agricultural lands in the state. The purpose of the exception is to allow limited, well-defined farm worker housing to be built on agricultural land, while maintaining the agricultural integrity of the property. Flexibility for Low and Moderate Income Housing Funds
(Sacramento) – A measure from Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) has passed its first committee test. Assembly Bill 720 will give cities and counties more flexibility in using low and moderate income housing funds to comply with state mandates regarding regional housing needs for affordable housing. In presenting AB 720 Assemblymember Caballero pointed out California's building industry is at historic lows and California should take every opportunity to encourage local agencies to rehabilitate houses and apartment buildings to create more livable units. Fair Pay for Braceros
(Sacramento) – The California State Assembly has approved Assembly Joint Resolution 2 (AJR2), from Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas). AJR2 calls for an extension of the deadline for World War Two era guest workers from Mexico, known as braceros, to file claims for repayment of money taken from their paychecks. AJR 2 also calls for the Mexican government to accept copies of documents showing participation in the bracero program, not original documents as currently required. The resolution asks the U.S. Government to intervene with the Mexican government on behalf of the braceros. Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
