SACRAMENTO – At yesterday’s meeting of the Sacramento Press Club, Assembly Budget Committee Chair John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) said he’s hopeful a new state budget will be ready by the start of the new fiscal year on July 1st. Mr. Laird pointed out that the Budget Conference Committee, which he chairs, continues to meet and hash out the differences between the governor’s revised budget that was released last month and the Democrat’s preferred spending plan. He also said the top four legislative leaders are meeting regularly in an effort to get a spending blueprint finalized on time. During a Q&A session with reporters at the Sacramento Press Club’s monthly meeting, Mr. Laird said he and his Democratic colleagues oppose the Governor’s proposal to cut hundreds of millions of dollars from public transit and the Governor’s proposal to pre-pay bond payments to Wall Street brokers at the expense of children and seniors in California. The Legislative Counsel says the governor’s proposal to cut more than $800-million from public transit funds is not legally achievable. Mr. Laird also said the call for school equalization funding is “robbing Peter to pay Paul” and will not benefit schools.
