August 6, 2007 To both legislative leaders from local districts, for attempting to put together a reasonable state budget. Assemblyman John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, is the Budget Committee chair, and has worked long hours in an attempt to create a budget that will pass muster with his own party, with Republicans and with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. State Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, whose district includes parts of Santa Cruz County, broke ranks with fellow Republicans and voted to approve the long-overdue budget.
