Support For Public Schools Urged

In Weekly Democratic Radio Address

This week, I am honored Assembly Speaker Núñez tapped me to deliver the Weekly Democratic Radio Address.  With the new school year beginning across California, I speak in the address about the contrast between back-to-school excitement and the challenges facing California’s schools.  You can access the address in English or Spanish as an MP3 file, or text-only, by clicking here: http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/templates/ademmain.asp?articleid=283&zoneid=2

Legislative Update

With less than a week left in this year’s legislative session, I’m pleased the following bills are headed for Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk:

AB 982—Community College Health Centers

AB 983—First-time Homebuyers’ Assistance

AB 1200—Disaster Planning for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta

AB 1201—Sierra Nevada Conservancy Technical Changes

AB 1202—Base Relocation and Alignment Assistance

AB 1386—Dental Sedation Safety

AB 1400—Civil Rights Act of 2005

AB 1524—Coastal Access

AB 1690—University of CA & Host Communities

I’m optimistic the Governor will sign these bills and others still moving through the legislative process.  For more about my legislative package, please visit:

More On The Passage Of The Civil Rights Act Of 2005

The Legislature made the right decision to make significant improvements to a significant civil rights law—the Unruh Act, making clear for businesses and customers that discrimination in any form is unacceptable, including discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status.

With Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature, we will strengthen for all Californians the Unruh Act, the centerpiece of non-discrimination protections in public accommodations.

To learn more about the passage of the bill, including some of my public comments and a surprise Republican vote, take a look at this story in the Capitol Weekly newspaper: http://capitolweekly.net/news/article.html?article_id=65
