Last year Assemblymember Jim Beall, Jr.’s parity bill, AB 423, made it all the way to the Governor’s desk before it was vetoed. The fight is far from over. Assemblymember Beall continues to push for the end of discrimination against those who suffer from mental health and substance abuse disorders this legislative year with the introduction of AB 1887.  The bill requires health insurers to provide coverage for mental health illnesses just as they would for a physical illness. Studies show the annual cost to the overwhelming majority of consumers would be minimal, ranging from $3.72 to $6.36.
