On Friday, March 2, 2007, Assemblymember Joe Coto (D-San Jose) will be visiting Seven Trees Elementary School to participate in their Read Across America Day.  Mr. Coto will be reading to a class of 2nd graders and stressing the importance of reading.

Read Across America Day is celebrated throughout the nation by schools, libraries and bookstores. March 2nd was selected because it is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. “For many children, Dr. Seuss was their first introduction into reading. It is appropriate that we kick off this annual effort to get children interested in a life-long habit of reading on the memory of his birthday,” Coto said. “I urge parents, grandparents, teachers, adults and teens to take time to read with a child.”

This annual event initiates the Read Across America nationwide campaign, sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA), to motivate children to read.  Some of the NEA’s partners in sponsoring Read Across America include:
the Girl Scouts of America; the American Library Association; the Boys and Girls Clubs of America; the International Reading Association; the National PTA; the Newspaper Association of America Foundation; the Screen Actors Guild Foundation; the National Football League; the National Basketball Association; and several baseball teams.

“I’m proud to join the Read Across America Team along with teachers, librarians, athletes, recording artists, actors, firefighters and police officers to make 2007 a pivotal year in celebrating America’s dedication to reading and learning,” Coto stated.
