Early Cancer Detection Saves Lives

(Sacramento) – Early detection of a cancer can mean the difference between life and death. The statistics show the stark reality: Only 19% of ovarian cancer is currently diagnosed in Stage 1, when there is a five-year survival rate of 92% for women who receive treatment. Instead, most women are only diagnosed when they have progressed to Stage 3 (24%, with a 42% five-year survival rate) or even worse, Stage 4 (25%, with only a 17% five-year survival rate). With those numbers and the lives behind them in mind Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Sally Lieber (D-San Jose) has introduced Assembly Bill 1774, which will expand cancer screenings for women to include ovarian and uterine cancer tests. Assemblymembers Kevin de León, Mervyn Dymally, Karen Bass, Felipe Fuentes and John Laird have already signed on as co-authors of AB 1774. Here’s more in this Assembly Web Report.
