Speaker Appoints Assemblyman Ira Ruskin as Chair of Key Environmental Budget Committee
SACRAMENTO— Assemblyman Ira Ruskin (D-Redwood City) was named by Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) as Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Resources. This key fiscal committee has jurisdiction over $5.7 billion and primary responsibility for the annual budgets of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Food and Agriculture, the Department of Water Resources, the Energy Commission, and the Air Resources Board.

“Some of the most crucial issues confronting California are in this committee’s jurisdiction,” Ruskin stated. “Implementation of the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (should it be signed into law), flood protection spending, and renewable energy goals are some highlights of what this committee will oversee. I am extremely pleased the Speaker has entrusted me with such an important post.”

Following the appointment, Speaker Nunez stated: “I chose Ira to lead this committee because of his long record as an environmentalist and his demonstrated leadership as Chair of the Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee. He’s thoughtful and has a command of the issues. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

The Subcommittee on Resources is one of five budget subcommittees in the Assembly that review, analyze, investigate and approve or disapprove each and every budget line-item within the respective subcommittee’s purview.

“Protecting California’s natural resources and environment has always been one of my highest priorities. I am anxious to begin this work,” Ruskin concluded.

Attached is a list of agencies, departments, commissions, conservancies and boards that fall under the subcommittee’s jurisdiction.
