Ruskin's Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Bill Is Signed

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Ira Ruskin’s AB 468 – legislation to ensure local governments are reimbursed for removing abandoned vehicles – was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger.  AB 468 is sponsored by the San Carlos Police Department and the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG).

“Let’s face it, when you have abandoned vehicles with flat tires and broken windshields, they detract from the beauty of our neighborhoods and the safety of our streets, and they must be removed,” Assemblymember Ruskin stated.  “AB 468 guarantees that cities and counties will receive monies from a special existing state fund to remove abandoned vehicles.  My roots are in local government, and I know how important this is.”

Assemblymember Ruskin worked with San Carlos Police Chief Greg Rothaus and other members of local governments to address a problem that San Carlos and many other cities face when removing the blight of abandoned vehicles.

“The abandoned vehicle problem in our communities is not just a nuisance issue; it's a real quality of life issue,” said Police Chief Rothaus. “Without this statute, we risked losing a valuable tool that has a proven track record of improving the quality of life in our communities.”
