On September 20, 2008 I hosted a Free Health Fair, “Healthy Start to the School Year,” for families to address prevalent children’s health problems like increased obesity, severe asthma and the lack of dental care.

Lack of resources and information often keep most people from receiving quality health care services.  In California alone, over 800, 000 children are uninsured.  I hosted a Health Fair in my district to give families access to the services and resources available to them.  Over 100 people attended the health fair held at the Fremont Family Resource Center to receive dental, vision, spinal, cholesterol screenings and acupuncture treatments.  People write into my office daily asking for assistance in accessing health services that are threatening their well being and the well being of their families.  The health fair was a great way of giving families the opportunity to get FREE health services and learning about the different activities that the entire family can enjoy.  This family event highlighted the risk of child obesity, children’s healthy eating, child diabetes, and asthma.  Although families face serious health problems, we must all get involved in assisting families in receiving quality health care and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Thank you to all who joined us and participated in making this Health Fair a successful, informative, and fun event.  I hope to continue working with all of you to improve the quality of life for all our children.

A range of local non-profit health organizations attended the Health Fair.  You are welcome to contact any of the participating agencies.  They are there to help you and to provide you with information to stay healthy.
