Mullin Mega Millions Bill Funds Critical Education Needs

Assemblymember Gene Mullin (D-South San Francisco), a former San Mateo County Teacher of the Year, is introducing legislation that both authorizes the California State Lottery Commission to enter into a multistate lottery agreement and ensures the Mega Millions education revenue is directed on a weighted per pupil basis to three K-12 programs: special education, English Language Learners and students receiving free or reduced meals.

“The Mega Millions monies are a supplement to school district budgets.  This proposal changes the way we allocate that supplement,” stated Mullin, who taught government and economics at South San Francisco High School for 32 years before serving in the Assembly. “My bill mandates the Mega Millions education revenue targets California’s most underserved school districts.”

The bill also ensures higher education continues to receive state lottery funds at the 2004/05 level.
