Stanislaus County has cut the final reimbursement check for the Scott Peterson trial as the State Assembly considers Assemblymember Gene Mullin’s effort to ensure future change of venue trials don’t drain county coffers.
Mullin’s Assembly Bill 27 requires a specific payment schedule be approved by the recipient and the originating county in change of venue trials. The measure obligates the recipient county to forward claims on a monthly basis and the treasurer from the originating county to pay the claims within 30 days.
“The recipient county in a change of venue rarely welcomes such trials, which extract resources, disrupt productivity and cause losses beyond trial court calculations. Assembly Bill 27 ensures that at the very least, counties will be reimbursed for costs not anticipated in any local budget.”
AB 27 will be presented to the full State Assembly this Thursday.
