Biotechnology, also known as life sciences, is a growth industry in California – a key driver in our economy that has created 225,000 high quality jobs for Californians. In 1976, I served on the South San Francisco Planning Commission which helped facilitate the location of Genentech, the first commercial biotech firm in the world, in South San Francisco. Today, California is home to the world’s largest life sciences cluster.
