Statement on Election of Karen Bass as Speaker

It’s a tremendous honor to be a part of this historic day, as we congratulate Karen Bass as the newly Elected Speaker of the Assembly.

This is the year that everyone is talking about change.  It’s an exciting time because we are seeing so much hope for the future.  But it’s also exciting because we are seeing – right now – the fulfillment of past hopes and dreams.

As we celebrate Black History month and honor the contributions, dreams, and sacrifices of African Americans, we should all be proud and thankful that this legacy of courage has brought us to this day…when California can benefit from the incredible leadership of Karen Bass, the first African American woman Speaker.

Speaker Bass has already done so much for California’s children and families.  With her ability to bring people together and her leadership expertise, she will accomplish even more as Speaker of the Assembly.  As the first Korean American Assemblywoman, I am looking forward with great anticipation to working with her in the most diverse legislature in the nation.  Congratulations, Speaker Bass.
