Assemblymember Mary Hayashi Pleased With LPGA’s Recent Decision To Drop English Proficiency Requirement

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) announced her support of the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association’s (LPGA) recent decision to suspend their new English language proficiency requirement while they continue to search for new ways to promote international players on the tour.

“The LPGA is correct for rescinding its discriminatory policy that would have suspended talented international players for not meeting proficiency requirements. It is significant for the LPGA to recognize the importance of diversity and understand that its proposal would simply set a bad precedent for other professional athletic associations.”

Assemblymember Hayashi stated that she is in the process of creating legislation that will seek to expand the role of the State Athletic Commission to avoid the potential for situations to occur in the future.

Assemblymember Hayashi currently serves the 18th Assembly District, which includes San Leandro, Hayward, Dublin, most of Castro Valley and Pleasanton, and a portion of Oakland, as well as the unincorporated areas of Ashland, Cherryland and San Lorenzo.
