Assemblymember Mary Hayashi Names Dian Harrison Of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate Her “Woman Of The Year”
Ms. Harrison Will Be Honored on the Assembly Floor in a Special Ceremony

HAYWARD – Assemblymember Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) has named Oakland resident, Ms. Dian Harrison, as her Woman of the Year for the 18th Assembly District.  A leader in women’s health, she has dedicated over 30 years of public service to the non-profit sector, and is currently President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate (PPGG).  A special ceremony will take place on Monday, March 10, 2008 at the State Capitol to recognize Ms. Harrison and the honorees from other Assembly districts.

“Dian has shown tremendous leadership through her efforts to protect the rights of women and provide affordable access to health care,” stated Assemblymember Hayashi. “She is an absolute inspiration – a model of courage, vision, and compassion that demonstrates how one person can make a difference in the lives of thousands of families.”

Under Ms. Harrison’s leadership, PPGG has become an award-winning provider for health care services in the Bay Area, where each year 55,000 women, men, and teens visit the organization’s eight health centers.   Prior to her appointment at PPGG, Ms. Harrison held leadership roles with the United Way and the Urban League, and was also the first woman to serve as Vice President of University Relations at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the oldest historically black colleges and universities.

“It is an incredible honor to receive this nomination from Assemblymember Hayashi and a privilege to serve members of Assembly District 18 through Planned Parenthood Golden Gate’s direct health services and education programs," said Ms. Harrison.  “This recognition is especially rewarding coming from a long-time advocate for women’s health who has been such a strong partner in improving the health and wellness of our local community.”

The Assembly Floor ceremony will feature a presentation of certificates to honorees by Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Núñez.  The event-filled day also includes a breakfast reception hosted by Lt. Governor John Garamendi, a tour of the California State Museum where each honoree’s picture and achievements will be on special display, and an evening reception in the State Capitol.

Assemblymember Hayashi currently serves the 18th Assembly District, which includes San Leandro, Hayward, Dublin, most of Castro Valley and Pleasanton, and a portion of Oakland, as well as the unincorporated areas of Ashland, Cherryland and San Lorenzo.
