HAYWARD – Assemblymember Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) today honored Mr. Charles Reynes as a 2007 California Teacher of the Year. Mr. Reynes, in recognition of his exceptional and dedicated service in the field of education, received this highest state-wide honor in a special ceremony on Monday, January 8th in Sacramento.

An elementary science specialist and an educator for more than 20 years, Mr. Reynes teaches at several schools in the Castro Valley Unified School District. Mr. Reynes strives to develop activities for students to learn complex ideas through hands-on experience. Evidence of his dedication to his students’ development includes his organization of an annual science night at each school where he teaches. Mr. Reynes plans to develop a math night and a citywide rocket-launching competition.

Mr. Reynes earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of San Francisco in 1982, and a Multiple Subject Credential in 1986 from California State University, East Bay (formerly CSU Hayward), where he also earned 32 units in accounting.

“I’m pleased to recognize Mr. Reynes as a 2007 California Teacher of the Year,” said Assemblymember Mary Hayashi. “His method of finding new and innovative ways to teach young people about science is commendable. Mr. Reynes exemplifies the highest caliber of teacher, which our students need to prepare them as the next generation of leaders and innovators.”
