Some 400 women treated themselves to the gift of healthy living at Assemblymember Mary Hayashi’s Women’s Health Fair on Mother’s Day weekend at the main San Leandro Library. The women participated in free screenings to test their blood glucose levels, blood pressure, spines, bone density and stress. They also heard presentations about Skin Care and Safe Cosmetics; Nutrition, Healthy Eating and Recipe Demonstrations and visited the community exhibiting booths.

Assemblymember Hayashi and Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums have teamed together to combat the epidemic of childhood obesity. They hosted a press conference at Oakland’s Parker Elementary School May 9 to promote new legislation introduced by Assemblymember Hayashi and sponsored by the City of Oakland, the Excellence in Physical Education Act of 2008, AB 2072. The Act will provide non-monetary awards to schools where their students meet or exceed state fitness standards.

Assemblymember Hayashi congratulates 29 students who were awarded scholarships at the Hispanic Community Affairs Council Scholarship Awards Luncheon Friday, May 9 at the Newark-Fremont Hilton Hotel. The scholarships went to students who are planning to go college as well as those who are already attending college who are of Hispanic heritage. The Hispanic Community Affairs Council (HCAC) is a community-based organization in Alameda County, which in its 25 years, has raised and given out over $1 million dollars in scholarship grants.

Assemblymember Speaker Karen Bass and Assemblymember Mary Hayashi toured the dental clinic at Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, Inc. in Hayward on Thursday, May 8th to explore ways to expand dental health services for children and to raise awareness of the challenges relating to quality of dental healthcare services.

Some 200 community members joined Assemblymember Mary Hayashi and Assemblymembers Sandré Swanson (D-Oakland), Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) and John Laird (D-Santa Cruz), Chair of the Assembly Budget Commmittee, in a regional town hall meeting Saturday morning, May 3rd at Alameda’s Encinal High School. The Town Hall examined California’s budget crisis and its impact on our communities.

Assemblymember Hayashi emceed Girls Incorporated celebration of 50 years of inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold on Friday, April 11th at the Rotunda building in Oakland.  Assemblymember Hayashi presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Pat Loomes, former Executive Director of Girls Incorporated.  She also recognized Eunice Azzani as the Strong, Smart, Bold Award winner.  We proudly celebrate their 50 years of fine programming and service to girls in Alameda County! 

Assemblymember Mary Hayashi congratulates the Sierra College wresting team, which won the 2007 California Community College State Championship. As chair for the Select Committee on Community Colleges, Assemblymember Hayashi, says Sierra College’s win has brought much happiness and pride to the state of California.

Assemblymember Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) has named Oakland resident, Ms. Dian Harrison (above-center), as Woman of the Year for the 18th Assembly District. Speaker-elect Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) (above-right) also congratulated Ms. Harrison. A leader in women’s health, Ms. Harrison, has dedicated more than 30 years of public service to the non-profit sector, and is currently serves as President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate (PPGG).

Hayashi Announces the Creation of the Office of Suicide Prevention

Assemblymember Hayashi (D-Hayward) announced that in accordance to her bill, AB 509, Governor Schwarzenegger will establish the Office of Suicide Prevention (OSP) under the Department of Mental Health.  By executive order, the OSP will be charged to implement a comprehensive and integrated approach to reducing the loss and suffering from suicide and suicidal behaviors on a statewide basis.
