Speaker Appoints Assemblymember Swanson To Select Committee On Hate Crimes

Assemblymember Sandré Swanson, currently serving as Chair of both the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee and the Select Committee on State School Financial Takeovers, has been appointed by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez to the Assembly Select Committee on Hate Crimes.  The Committee is chaired by Assemblymember Mike Eng (D – Monterey Park).

“I am pleased that the California Legislature has been at the forefront of addressing the serious and unique matter of crimes motivated by hate. This Committee will provide an opportunity to explore practical ways to reduce the number of hate crimes in our communities,” Mr. Swanson observed.
The Select Committee on Hate Crimes will convene hearings throughout California that seek input from civil rights and community leaders on the impact of this type of crime.

“I believe Assemblymember Swanson is a great addition to the select committee,” stated Chairman Mike Eng.  “I look forward to working closely with him, as well as the other newly appointed members of the select committee, as we begin to examine the impact of hate crimes in our state and develop new policy solutions to address these problems.”

Other Members of the Assembly Select Committee on Hate Crimes are Assemblymembers  Greg Aghazarian (R – Stockton), Anna Caballero (D – Salinas), Shirley Horton (R – Lemon Grove), Paul Krekorian (D – Glendale), John Laird (D – Santa Cruz), Ira Ruskin (D - Los Altos), Jose Solorio (D – Anaheim), and Sandré Swanson (D – Oakland).
