Black Elected Officials and Faith Based Leaders of the East Bay discuss leadership mobilization to address crime

Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson convened a meeting of the Black Elected Officials and Faith Based Leaders of the East Bay on Aug. 29 to discuss the role of leadership in finding solutions to the crime crisis in the county.

Some 80 political and faith leaders were present at the meeting. Speakers who addressed the issues and programs underway were: Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan and Percy Campbell of the Peace Keepers Outreach.

Participating in the discussion were Representative Barbara Lee, Assemblyman Sandré Swanson, former Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris, Councilwoman Desley Brooks, Dr. Tony Perkins, retired, Alameda County Health Services, representatives from the offices of Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and State Senator Don Perata, Bishop Bob Jackson and other prominent community leaders. The outcome of the meeting was a renewed commitment to leadership through a variety of actions, including volunteering, mentoring youth, churches adopting schools, and fighting for government funding to expand programs.
