Swanson votes to shift presidential primary date |
|
From the Globe Political Desk Assemblyman Sandré Swanson (D-Oakland) joined his colleagues recently in passing SB113, legislation that will move California’s presidential primary from June to February. “A February presidential primary will give California a real voice in national presidential politics,” said Swanson. With the current primary date set as late as June, Californians are cheated out of the opportunity to vet presidential candidates on the issues that disproportionately affect them, such as healthcare, education and prison reform, bill supporters said. “California is the most populous and diverse state in the nation, yet the June primary virtually ensures that the major party nominees will be determined before voters here can cast their ballots,” said Swanson. “California is a world leader on the environment and responsible global trade. Californians deserve better than to be electoral leftovers.” Swanson pointed to the importance of the upcoming presidential election that this bill will impact: “This is a historic moment for our nation. The next president must be decisive on the questions of war and peace, a national solution to our growing health care crisis and restoring integrity and trust in the presidency. It is very important that all presidential candidates come to California and give their positions on the critical issues of our times.” On the concern that this bill will have an adverse fiscal impact on the counties having to administer the elections, Swanson joined with Speaker Fabien Nuñez in assuring the commitment of the Legislature that all payments for the costs incurred for the February presidential primary will be issued in a prompt and reasonable timeframe. |
