Sacramento, CA On Tuesday, June 15th, Assemblywoman Hancock (D-Berkeley) and members of the Legislature will join the UC Student Association, California State Student Association, and California Student Association of Community Colleges on the “Run for Education” to show their support for higher education.
The student coalition began their 24-hour-a-day relay around the State Capitol building last Monday, demanding that lawmakers continue fighting for access and affordability for all students. Since then, the students and supporters have run over 560 miles.
The Governor’s proposed budget for higher education includes reductions in student aid, fee hikes, turning away thousands of qualified students from the University of California, California State University, and Community Colleges, and the elimination of state funding for programs designed to prepare low-income, under-served students for college academics.
However, both the Senate Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Education and Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 2 on Education Finance voted to restore funding for valuable outreach programs and to avoid redirecting thousands of students from University of California or California State University campuses to community colleges.
“For over 40 years, California has promised that every qualified student could attend one of our state’s public higher education institutions. That promise is now in danger of being broken,” said Assemblywoman Hancock.
