Oakland, CA – TODAY, Assemblywoman Loni Hancock and a group of local elected officials, community members and regional agency staff will spend the day literally exploring the San Pablo Avenue corridor.

“San Pablo Avenue has had a fascinating history, is still a heavily-traveled corridor and has the potential to become a world-class boulevard. I am looking forward to working with residents, merchants, urban planners, elected officials and students to think about how San Pablo Avenue can develop into a regional example of the new urbanism,” said Assemblywoman Hancock.

The San Pablo Avenue Exploration Day will happen in three parts: First, a “Great Corridors” Workshop at Contra Costa College. Next, members of the Greenbelt Alliance will guide a bus tour of San Pablo Avenue, from the City of San Pablo to Oakland. The group will return to a Caltrans-sponsored community meeting in Oakland to share ideas.

Each of the three events of the day will include looking at pedestrian- and transit-oriented development, land use and density, economic vitality, public amenities and community character. At the community meeting, this will include the use of interactive polling technology that tallies and shares the responses from all participants on the spot.

The “Great Corridors” Workshop and the San Pablo Avenue bus tour are invitation-only events, but the media is welcome. At 9:30 a.m., the workshop will begin at Contra Costa College, Music Building Room 116, 2600 Mission Bell Drive, City of San Pablo. The public workshop will take place from 2:30- 4:30 p.m. at the Oakland Public Library Auditorium, located at 125 14th Street in downtown Oakland. The media is welcome to attend this public workshop event as well.
