Assemblywoman Hancock Marches For Women’s Lives In D.C.

Washington, D.C. – On April 25, Assemblywoman Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) will be marching with a million activists from across the nation in an historic effort for Choice, Justice, Access, Health, Abortion, and Global & Family Planning for women. She will be marching with the California Democratic Women’s Legislative Caucus.

This pro-choice march is the first collaborative effort of a diverse planning group consisting of seven leading national rights groups. The National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America, American Civil Liberties Union, Black Women's Health Imperative, Feminist Majority, and National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health are the principle organizers of this march. In addition, delegations and other progressive organizations from all over the country will be marching as co-sponsors of this momentous event.

For the first time since the legalization of abortion through Roe v. Wade in 1973, the current court rulings are putting women’s reproductive rights in jeopardy. “The right of choice was a hard fought battle that took a generation to achieve and is maintained only by vigilance,” said Assemblywoman Hancock, “We are going to Washington to remind our representatives that they must protect the rights of women to make our own reproductive decisions.”

One-third of the people participating in the march are young women between the ages of 18-30. Just as important, men, supporting women’s rights, are signed up to march in record numbers because they realize that women’s reproductive choices are their choices as well. Assemblywoman Hancock expects that, “This march will bring attention to the fact that the right to choose is in serious danger. This concerted effort to mobilize people will help make others aware that this right should not be undermined.”
