RICHMOND — Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, D-Berkeley, presented Contra Costa County Health Services' Environmental Health Division with a $298,841 grant Friday.

The grant is one of 38 the California Integrated Waste Management Board approved in 2005 to help prevent tires from being illegally dumped. A total of $5.2 million in grants will be distributed statewide.

The county's health services department will use the money to oversee waste tire facilities and to establish an inspection and monitoring system and database to ensure proper disposal, according to Hancock's office.

Alameda County and the cities of Berkeley and Oakland also have received waste tire enforcement grants.
