SAN FRANCISCO, CA— In honor of Earth Day 2008, Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) is teaming up with Goodwill Industries, Cole Hardware and the S.F. Department of Environment to sponsor and promote e-waste recycling events across the City to help inform the public on how to dispose of e-waste properly.

WHAT: Press Conference & E-Waste Drop Off Event

WHEN: Saturday, April 19, 2008

TIME: 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: Goodwill, 1580 Mission Street at S. Van Ness Avenue

NOTE: Leno will greet e-waste recyclers at Goodwill for about an hour

“Many types of e-waste and universal waste contain toxic substances like lead, mercury and arsenic, among others,” said Assemblyman Mark Leno.  “E-waste is a rapidly growing problem and if it’s not disposed of properly, it is a threat to us and our environment.”

”Last year we diverted 59,863 computers from landfill, and we hope to divert twice as many this year” said Kim Fox, Director of Environmental Business for Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties. “Some computers are refurbished and resold, while others are recycled using a certified recycler that has passed a rigorous environmental and social downstream audit.”

The U.S. generates more e-waste than any other nation, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Televisions, computer monitors, computers fluorescent lamps, mercury-containing switches, and batteries are among the many items that should never be thrown into the garbage.

The following locations will accept e-waste: Goodwill Industries at 3801 Third Street at Evans, 3861 24th Street near Sanchez, 1669 Fillmore Street at Post, 1700 Haight Street at Cole. Cole Hardware locations at 3312 Mission Street, 3354 Polk Street and 956 Cole Street will accept batteries, cell phones and compact florescent lights only.

Recyclers at the Goodwill (1580 Mission St) and the Cole Hardware locations will receive a free canvas bag goodie bag from the San Francisco Department of Environment.
