California Bicycle Coalition Honors Assemblyman Mark Leno as "Legislator of the Year"
Leno recognized for his efforts to promote bicycling and other clean forms of transportation that reduce greenhouse gas emissions

SACRAMENTO, CA— The California Bicycle Coalition presented Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) with its “Legislator of the Year” award today for his dedication to creating safe, healthy and livable communities through bicycling and other forms of clean transportation, including his work on AB 1358, the “Complete Streets” bill.

Assemblyman Leno was presented the “Legislator of the Year” award by KC Butler, the Executive Director of the California Bicycle Coalition.  “The ‘Complete Streets’ concept is very bold, and this bill is creating buzz around the country. There is truly a paradigmatic shift underway in the way we plan our motorized and non-motorize transportation networks.  The California Bicycle Coalition is proud to present this award to a most forward thinking lawmaker in Assemblyman Mark Leno,” said Butler.

“I am grateful to have the collaboration of the California Bicycle Coalition on our Complete Streets measure and I’m honored to be named their ‘Legislator of the Year,’ said Assemblyman Mark Leno.  “By promoting bicycling, we can help reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions while improving our overall health.  Together, we will complete our streets.”

AB 1358 would require a city or county’s general plan to identify how they will accommodate the circulation of all users of the roadway, including motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and users of public transportation.  The new general plan provisions would be required when local governments next revise what is known as the circulation element which addresses flow of traffic through a local transportation system utilizing better planning to ease congestion.  Such accommodations may include sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, wide shoulders, medians, bus pullouts, and audible pedestrian signals, among others.

"Streets aren’t' just for cars, they’re for people and AB 1358 will ensure our roadways are safe and convenient for everyone - young or old, riding a bike or on foot, in a car or on a bus.  I look forward to working with the California Bicycle Coalition and the many groups involved in the Complete Streets movement on the passage of AB 1358 this year,” added Leno.

For those joining in gay marriages today, the road from outlaw status to respectability was paved in the Legislature over three decades.

From decriminalizing sex between same-sex couples, to outlawing job discrimination against homosexuals, to adding gay members to the legislative roster, the government has been taking steps, measure-by-measure, that have led to gay couples joining hands in marriage ceremonies across the state.
