SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) emphasized his strong support of the Chinatown City College campus today with the following statement:
“I proudly represent the Chinatown community in the State Assembly and I am in full support of a permanent Chinatown City College campus. A quality education offers tremendous opportunities for economic independence and increased quality of life for many mono-lingual immigrants in our city. I am committed to ensuring that the Chinatown community’s educational needs are met with a new neighborhood campus.
Later this month, members of the City College Board of Trustees, which has granted an exemption to every City College campus in San Francisco, will decide the future of the Chinatown City College campus. I strongly urge the board to continue this commitment to education by exempting the Chinatown project from height restrictions in the City planning code. It is my hope that the Board will join me in supporting this important educational resource for Chinatown.
I commend the steadfast dedication of neighborhood groups who have encouraged civic participation and engagement related to this issue. The educational interests of the Chinatown community should not be dictated by private interests.
The Chinatown community has waited for a permanent campus for too long. I look forward to the day that a Chinatown Campus will become a reality.”
For those joining in gay marriages today, the road from outlaw status to respectability was paved in the Legislature over three decades.
From decriminalizing sex between same-sex couples, to outlawing job discrimination against homosexuals, to adding gay members to the legislative roster, the government has been taking steps, measure-by-measure, that have led to gay couples joining hands in marriage ceremonies across the state.
