SACRAMENTO, CA –Assemblyman Mark Leno honored florist Guy Clark, owner of “Guy’s Flowers” today with the ‘Small Business of the Year’ award at the California Legislature’s Small Business Day 2007. California Small Business Day is sponsored by the California Small Business Association to recognize the contributions small businesses make to the economic vitality of our state.
“Guy Clark’s ingenuity and artistic talents have resulted in a business that epitomizes the neighborhood around him— colorful, diverse and inventive,” said Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco). “In January, Guy did not allow bigotry and racism to hinder his ability to see the beauty in his neighborhood around him. It is my honor to recognize Guy for his entrepreneurial talents and his brave stand against racism.”
Guy Clark founded Guy’s Flowers at Noe and 15th Streets in San Francisco’s Castro District 25 years ago. Clark and his flower shop are fixtures in the neighborhood— taking part in various community events and contributing to local charities in the Bay Area. His business has received the “Best of the Best” Award from the San Francisco Bay Guardian as well as “Best Hole-in-the-Wall” from San Francisco Weekly Magazine.
For those joining in gay marriages today, the road from outlaw status to respectability was paved in the Legislature over three decades.
From decriminalizing sex between same-sex couples, to outlawing job discrimination against homosexuals, to adding gay members to the legislative roster, the government has been taking steps, measure-by-measure, that have led to gay couples joining hands in marriage ceremonies across the state.
