Assemblymember Ammiano Lobbies for Bay Area, State
(Washington DC) – A bipartisan delegation of 20 Assemblymembers, including Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), recently went to Washington, D.C. to press key Congressional and Administration officials on budgetary and policy issues critical to California. Assemblymember Ammiano says California contributes a great deal to the nation and it’s crucial the state receive as much federal stimulus funding as possible. Assemblymember Ammiano says he lobbied personally for money for Bay Area projects, like the Golden Gate Bridge suicide deterrent and he says the delegation also worked to secure $1 billion in increased federal funding for health care related costs; lobbied for federal funds for California’s high-speed-rail system; sought funding for drought relief and pushed for more federal support for California’s green economy programs. Here’s more from Assemblymember Ammiano in this Assembly Access video. (Each legislator paid his or her own expenses on the trip.)

Spending Cuts May Endanger Californians, Cost State More Later
Sacramento - The Budget Conference Committee is continuing to meet daily at the state capitol, searching for ways to reduce Californias massive budget deficit. However, some of the program eliminations and reductions proposed in the Governors revised budget will endanger the lives of the most vulnerable people in the state and will likely end up costing the state more in the long run by pushing those affected by the budget cuts into more expensive programs and the loss of matching federal dollars. Assembly Democrats believe smarter, more responsible budget solutions are needed.
