SACRAMENTO UPDATE
by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma

First and foremost, I would like to thank all my neighbors in the 12th Assembly District for the honor and opportunity to represent you in Sacramento. Now that the election is over, I am eager to get to work and use my experience as a Supervisor and Certified Public Accountant to pass legislation and provide customer service that will improve our quality of life.

On December 2nd, I was joined by 500 members of our community at the Dianne Feinstein Elementary School for an informal celebration and swearing-in ceremony performed by Judge Lillian Sing.

Majority Whip – Two days later at the State Capitol I was officially sworn in and the Speaker of the Assembly immediately named me to a key leadership position—Majority Whip.   As Majority Whip, I will work to ensure the passage of legislation important to Californians.  In addition to serving as Majority Whip, I will serve on a number of key committees, which are expected to be announced sometime this month.

Pedestrian and Traffic Safety – On my first day, I introduced a bill, Assembly Bill 23, to require Caltrans to install countdown signals on state highways near schools and senior centers.  In our community, this includes 19th Avenue, El Camino Real, Van Ness Avenue and Sloat Boulevard.

Last year there were nearly 700 pedestrian injuries and 14 fatalities in the City.  The countdown signal is a basic safety device and will go a long way to ensure that seniors and children are able to safely cross some of our state’s busiest streets.

This legislation continues my work as an advocate for safe streets. As a Supervisor, I authored legislation mandating school crossing signs and crosswalks as well as spearheading the “Slow Down, Look Around” campaign.

In addition, I authored Assembly Bill 101, to make drivers aware of roads that are regularly closed during the winter months.  When we think about traveling to see friends and family during the holidays, it is critically important for Californians to know the safest travel routes.

The Next Two Years – Alleviating district problems such as pedestrian safety will be a top priority of mine over the next two years.  In addition, I plan to make public education, access to affordable health care, affordable housing, and job and business creation all major priorities.

District Ideas – Our democracy works best when everyone participates and I urge all of you to contact my office with your ideas on legislation for this upcoming year. I also encourage you to keep me posted on future events in our neighborhoods.

I look forward to continue working with all of you and making our community a better place to live for everyone
