| The nation's number one ranked high school girl's basketball team concludes story book season with trip to Sacramento | |
SACRAMENTO- Today, The Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory Girl’s Varsity Basketball team was honored by Assembly Members Mark Leno and Fiona Ma on the Floor of the California Assembly. The Lady Irish of San Francisco were presented with a Legislative Resolution for concluding the season as the Number 1 ranked team in the Country. The team recently completed a storybook season by winning the California division III state championship. “Over the last few months, the Lady Irish captured the heart of San Francisco,” said Assemblymember Mark Leno (D-San Francisco). “Despite a mid-season tragedy, the team persevered with hard work and determination and made our city proud.” “The legislature can learn a lot from the amazing accomplishment of these student athletes” said Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco). “When you work together as a team—anything is possible.” The Sacred Heart Cathedral Fighting Irish, ranked number 1 on every state and national poll, defeated Magnolia-Anaheim 48-33 on Saturday, March 15 securing its 3rd consecutive division III state title and 56th victory in a row. The championship victory was preceded by a dramatic win over another nationally ranked team, Saint Mary’s of Stockton, where Junior Guard Tierra Rogers hit the winning basket with time running out. The Lady Irish and Rogers made national headlines earlier this year when Rogers’ father, Terrell, an anti-violence advocate in the city, was murdered at halftime of a game on Jan. 12. Despite having to cancel 1 game and postponing another, the Lady Irish remained undeterred, playing a schedule that included wins over all 4 of the other state champions, including a convincing win over the nation’s 3rd ranked team-Long Beach Polly. It is appropriate that we honor Cesar Chavez and his legacy by showing our support for public education by marching side by side with public school families, students and faculty. We encourage all participants to wear a red top and bring signs expressing support for public education. Please share this invitation with everyone in your school and other communities. | |
