Momentum Builds For Domestic Violence Database

Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully, Crime Victims United &
Survivors in Action support Assembly Bill 1771

SACRAMENTO—Momentum keeps building for the passage of Assembly Bill 1771, the new bill to make information about domestic abusers available on the Internet and strengthen protections for Californians facing domestic violence.

In a press conference today in the Governor’s press conference room, Assembly Majority Whip Fiona Ma announced the support of Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully, Crime Victims United of California and Survivors In Action.

“As Sacramento’s district attorney, I have made it a priority to bring domestic violence offenders to justice,” said District Attorney Scully.  “AB 1771 will guarantee that Californians know whether a person has in fact been convicted and provides additional tools so they can protect themselves.”

Crime Victims United of California, the state’s largest organization advocating for victims’ rights, and Survivors In Action, a national nonprofit based in California, also came on board as supporters of the measure in letters to Assemblywoman Ma.

“If I would have known that my abuser had a domestic violence conviction prior to our relationship, it may have saved me from permanent nerve damage,” said Alexis Moore, President of Survivors in Action.

“I am pleased that District Attorney Scully, Crime Victims United and Survivors in Action are standing with me in the passage of this crucial legislation,” added Assemblywoman Ma.  “Law enforcement and victims’ advocates play a crucial role in the aftermath of domestic violence.  Together, we’re now working to prevent it.”

Jim Hammer, the former San Francisco prosecutor who proposed the bill, vowed to continue the effort across California.

“There is growing support all across California for domestic violence disclosure,” said Mr. Hammer.  “AB 1771 gives people the information and the power to do something about it.”
