Hearing on Legislation to Ban Toxic Toys and Baby Bottles
Assemblywoman Fiona Ma to present AB 1108 before Assembly Environmental Safety and Toxics Materials Committee
WHAT:

Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco) will present legislation, AB 1108, to keep toxic chemicals out of toys and care products used by babies. The bill is modeled after an ordinance that Ma wrote while at the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco.

AB 1108 will prohibit the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of toys and child care products intended for use by children under the age of three that contain bisphenol –A and certain phthalates.  Phthalates cause reproductive defects, interfere with the hormone system, are linked to premature birth, and early onset of puberty. Bisphenol – A, which mimics estrogen, has been shown to have hormone disrupting effects, and some mice studies have shown that it can produce hyperactivity, faster growth in females and earlier onset of puberty.

The bill delays implementation of the law until January 1, 2009 to provide the industry with time to comply with the new restrictions.
