Biography
Fiona Ma was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2006, proudly representing the 12th Assembly District (Westside of San Francisco and San Mateo counties (Daly City, Broadmoor and Colma)). In December 2006, Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez appointed Fiona as “Majority Whip” making her the highest ranking Asian American woman in the California Legislature. As Majority Whip, Fiona works directly with Speaker Nunez and the leadership team to identify and implement the Assembly Democrats legislative agenda.
In addition to her leadership role, Fiona Ma serves on the following Assembly committees allowing her to utilize her many years of public and private sector experience:
Appropriations, Health, Revenue and Taxation, Public Safety and Joint Legislative Audit.
Prior to her election to the State Assembly, Fiona represented San Francisco’s Sunset/Parkside District (District 4), serving as an elected member of the 11-member Board of Supervisors from 2002-2006. During her tenure, Fiona introduced landmark legislation to enact a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program to help small businesses. Fiona sponsored legislation addressing human trafficking, pedestrian safety, graffiti, disaster preparedness, home ownership opportunities, worker retention, construction workers’ health & safety and toxic exposure towards children. She also successfully advocated for improved services for seniors, increased funding for public schools, opportunities for working families, programs for neighborhood youth and violence prevention. As a member of the Budget and City Services Committees, Fiona utilized her training as a CPA to cut bureaucratic waste while funding critical city services including mental health clinics, senior centers, residential treatment homes for single mothers and assistance for survivors of domestic violence. Fiona has served on other boards/committees including the Joint Committee of the SF Unified School District and SF Board of Supervisors, San Francisco Disaster Council, San Francisco County Transportation Authority, Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), and the California Earthquake Authority Advisory Panel.
Prior to the Board of Supervisors, Fiona served as a district representative to Senator John Burton (retired) for 7 years. Her areas of responsibility included Medi-Cal, childcare and professional licensing, job training, secondary education and preschool funding, workers’ compensation and unemployment compensation.
Fiona is Chair of the Asian American Donor Program; serves on the Board of Directors of the Chinese American Voters Education Committee (CAVEC), Asian Diabetes Council of the American Diabetes Association, Demo; Former Board Member of the National Women’s Political Caucus (NWPC) San Francisco, San Francisco Women’s Political Committee, San Francisco Democratic Women’s Forum; Founding Member of the Westside Chinese Democrat Club; Former Delegate to the CA Democratic Party; Volunteer Coordinator for the SF Food Bank; Elder at St. John’s Presbyterian Church.
Fiona received her B.S. from the Rochester Institute of Technology (NY), her M.S. in Taxation from Golden Gate University (SF), and an MBA from Pepperdine University. She is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the State of California. |
