Legislation Unveiled to Crack Down on Recycling Theft by Poacher Fleets
WHAT:

Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D-San Francisco) will announce the successful passage of her legislation, Assembly Bill 1778, which cracks down on professional recycling poachers.  On Thursday, AB 1778 cleared the Assembly floor with a bipartisan vote of 42-20.  The bill, which places responsible requirements on buy back operations and salvage yards that purchase large quantities of newspaper and recyclable CRV materials like aluminum cans, is in response to the growing trend of organized poaching rings roaming the streets late at night and stealing materials from recycling bins.  These poachers, operating as organized fleets, wake residents up in the middle of the night, throw materials they don’t want on the ground and trespass on private property.
