DeSaulnier Appointed To New Assembly Committee On Youth Violence Prevention

SACRAMENTO - In continuing efforts to stem the growing violence among our youth, Assembly Member Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) has been appointed to the Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention.

“Communities from throughout this state have seen a discouraging swell in the amount and severity of violence among our children and young adults,” said Assembly Member DeSaulnier.

“Our local communities are not immune.  As a member of the Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention, I will continue to work with our community leaders, law enforcement officials and educators to discuss preventative measures at the local level while also traveling to other parts of the state to learn about other possible solutions.”

The Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention is chaired by Assembly Member Anna Caballero (D-Salinas).  Committee members represent all areas of the state.

The committee will work with statewide law enforcement groups, educators, faith-based organizations and violence prevention experts to better define the causes of youth violence and develop prevention programs.

“I am working with Assembly Member Caballero and Speaker Nunez to have a Select Committee hearing held in Contra Costa County that will focus on creating programs that address our issues as a suburban community,” continued DeSaulnier.

“We have to provide our youth with more opportunity and a greater sense of hope for their futures. The stakes are too high and the consequences too great.”

DeSaulnier will attend the Committee’s inaugural hearing in Los Angeles on Friday, May 4, 2007.
