California Assembly Passes Bill to Help Build A Children's Museum in Sacramento |
| SACRAMENTO Assemblymember Dave Jones (D-Sacramento) announced today that his bill to facilitate the development of a children’s museum in Sacramento has unanimously passed out of the State Assembly.
Assembly Bill 2782 authorizes the State Department of Parks and Recreation to allow the development of a Children’s Museum on State owned land in Sacramento. The museum would be developed by the non-profit Sacramento Children’s Museum organization. State Parks would not be required to contribute funding to the development of the museum. The Sacramento Children's museum is planned to be a hands-on and fully interactive experience for children up to eight years of age where childhood is respected and nurtured. Other Children's Museums around the country feature hands-on exhibits, both indoors and outdoors, that seek to challenge a young person's mind while engaging them in a fun activity. The Sacramento Children's Museum will develop exhibits that encourage learning through play, that challenge children to learn in other innovative ways. In the past two decades, more than 300 children's museums have opened worldwide. In 2004 alone, more than 25 million people visited children's museums. Sacramento is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country that does not have a museum that caters to children, specifically. The bill now moves to the State Senate for consideration. |
