Assembly Democrats, Hmong Community Rally for Justice

(Sacramento) - Hundreds of members of the Hmong community rallied yesterday afternoon on the steps of the State Capitol to cheer the passage of Assembly Joint Resolutions 36 and 37 by Assemblymembers Dave Jones (D-Sacramento) and Juan Arambula (D-Fresno) by the Assembly Judiciary Committee. AJR 36 calls on the United States government to use all diplomatic means to assist the Hmong people who are suffering in Laos and Thailand. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report, decades after the Hmong people worked with the United States military in the Vietnam War the communist government of Laos continues to torture and exterminate Hmong people and thousand more are refugees in Thailand with little or no support from the Thai government. AJR 37 calls on the State Legislature to commend the federal government for enacting a law that no longer classifies Hmong allies as “terrorists” that had inadvertently resulted from their support of the U.S. military during the Vietnam War.

Assembly Democrats on Mortgage Crisis

(Sacramento) -- Assembly Democrats, led by Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Núñez, are calling for a special legislative session to address the growing foreclosure crisis. The Speaker and the Assembly Democrats have introduced a package of bills designed to stem the rising tide of foreclosures and keep the problem from happening again in the future. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report the Center for Responsible Lending says nearly 180,000 California homes will be lost to foreclosure from the 826,900 sub-prime loans made in 2005-2006 alone. Thousands of families are suffering and California could lose nearly $3 billion in property tax revenue.

Democratic Flood Protection Bills Become Law (Sacramento) – California has taken a major step to avoid a potential flooding disaster like the one that ravaged New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck the region two years ago. A package of landmark flood protection bills, authored by Assembly Democrats, has been signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report the Assembly Democrat’s flood protection package will strengthen flood protections now and in the future.
