Financial Relief for California Hospitals
(Sacramento) - Legislation by Assemblymember Dave Jones (D-Sacramento), Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, to secure additional federal funding to provide financial relief to California hospitals has been approved by the State Assembly and is pending in the State Senate. "Hospitals across California are struggling under the financial burden of low and declining Medi-Cal reimbursement and the rising number of uninsured patients," stated Jones. Assembly Bill 1383 will levy a provider fee on hospitals that would then be used to "draw down" an additional $2-3 billion in federal matching Medicaid funds to increase Medi-Cal payments to hospitals and to pay for health care coverage for children. Assembly Health Committee Approves Bi-Partisan Cal-COBRA Premium Assistance Bill
(Sacramento) – The Assembly Health Committee has approved bi-partisan legislation from Assemblymembers Dave Jones (D-Sacramento) and Nathan Fletcher (R-San Diego) that’s necessary to help recently unemployed Californians keep their health insurance. Assembly Bill 23 will ensure Californians who lose their jobs while working for a small employer (through a layoff or other involuntarily termination) are notified they may be eligible for a 65% subsidy under the federal stimulus bill to help them pay for and keep their health insurance. It also gives those who lost their jobs on September 1, 2008 through February 16th and did not elect to continue their health insurance under COBRA the ability to seek that coverage now with a significant federal subsidy. Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
Improving Health Care With Federal Stimulus Package Money
(Sacramento) – California State Assemblymember Dave Jones (D-Sacramento), Chair of the Assembly Health Committee, convened a special hearing to investigate ways to maximize federal stimulus package dollars that are tagged for health care related uses. Chairman Jones says there's a sizeable amount of money in the federal stimulus package to bolster the Medi-Cal program and additional funding to assist Californians who are unemployed retain their health care coverage. “One Strike” Bill for Dangerous Charter Buses
(Sacramento) – In response to the tragic October 5th, 2008 Colusa bus crash Assemblymember Dave Jones (D – Sacramento) has introduced a “one strike and you are out” bill to crack down on dangerous charter buses. Assembly Bill 636, sponsored by the California Bus Association, would permanently rescind licenses for both bus companies and drivers for failure to comply with safety and licensing regulations. “Right now, the penalties for charter buses and drivers who are not properly licensed and not safe are far too low,” said Assemblymember Jones. “They do not act as a deterrent for fly-by-night, rogue bus companies from continuing operation, and they do not prevent disasters like the one that occurred in October from happening.” Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
Assemblymember Jones honors Mrs. Mary Anne Aikens as his 2009 Woman of the Year
Mrs. Aikens has been a Foster Mother to 1200 children since 1975; she has 10 adopted Foster Children. Since 1990, she has provided a home to more than 900 children with physical and mental challenges. Many of these children were not supposed to walk, talk or play. Many of them have learned to walk and talk and play thanks to her loving care
Governor’s Veto Record Nothing To Be Proud Of
(Sacramento) – California Assembly Democrats say the Governor’s record setting use of his veto pen, and the rubber stamp veto message used on many of them, is not something to be proud of. Assemblymember Dave Jones (D-Sacramento) says Governor Schwarzenegger ignored his duty to carefully review all legislation when he decided to use a “canned” veto message to dismiss dozens of pieces of legislation. During a news conference Assemblymember Jones said, “Ordinary Californians throughout the state should be very disappointed with our Governor. The fact that he issued so many canned vetoes. He didn’t even bother to look at the work that so many people across the state contributed to.”
Assembly Democrats, Hmong Community Rally for Justice
(Sacramento) - Hundreds of members of the Hmong community rallied yesterday afternoon on the steps of the State Capitol to cheer the passage of Assembly Joint Resolutions 36 and 37 by Assemblymembers Dave Jones (D-Sacramento) and Juan Arambula (D-Fresno) by the Assembly Judiciary Committee. AJR 36 calls on the United States government to use all diplomatic means to assist the Hmong people who are suffering in Laos and Thailand. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report, decades after the Hmong people worked with the United States military in the Vietnam War the communist government of Laos continues to torture and exterminate Hmong people and thousand more are refugees in Thailand with little or no support from the Thai government. AJR 37 calls on the State Legislature to commend the federal government for enacting a law that no longer classifies Hmong allies as “terrorists” that had inadvertently resulted from their support of the U.S. military during the Vietnam War.
Assembly Democrats on Mortgage Crisis
(Sacramento) -- Assembly Democrats, led by Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Núñez, are calling for a special legislative session to address the growing foreclosure crisis. The Speaker and the Assembly Democrats have introduced a package of bills designed to stem the rising tide of foreclosures and keep the problem from happening again in the future. As we learn in this Assembly Web Report the Center for Responsible Lending says nearly 180,000 California homes will be lost to foreclosure from the 826,900 sub-prime loans made in 2005-2006 alone. Thousands of families are suffering and California could lose nearly $3 billion in property tax revenue.
