SACRAMENTOLegislation by Assemblywoman
Lois Wolk
(D-Davis) to expand the
Port
of
Sacramento
’s business prospects by creating a new governance structure passed off the Assembly Floor yesterday on a unanimous, bipartisan vote.
“The purpose of this bill is to ensure that the
Port
of
Sacramento
continues to play a key role in the movement of goods throughout
California
,” said Wolk. “Industry experts agree that if the Port is to remain competitive, providing quality jobs throughout the region, the management structure needs to be changed. AB 2939 would make the changes needed to secure the Ports continued prosperity.”
Assembly Bill 2939 would remove the City and
County
of
Sacramento
from the Sacramento-Yolo Port
District
, which currently manages the port. The Port’s management would then be left entirely to its host jurisdiction, the City of
West Sacramento
and
Yolo
County
. The bill also reduces the number of Port Commissioners from 7 to 5, with one of the five members being appointed from
Yolo
County
, the other four from the City of
West Sacramento
.
This legislation would codify an existing binding agreement between all parties that creates an interim Port Commission that would take over Port governance from the City and
County
of
Sacramento
. The interim commission would be disbanded once AB 2939 is signed into law.
“Currently, the Sacramento-Yolo Port
District
is the only Port
District
on the West Coast not managed by its host jurisdiction,” said Wolk. “It’s time for that to change.”
AB 2939, which now moves to the Senate, is supported by Yolo County Supervisor Mike McGowan, the CA Association of Port Authorities, City of
West Sacramento
,
County
of
Sacramento
, and
Port
of
Oakland
.
