Wolk announces workshop for senior drivers

Speakers from DMV will present on licensing issues for aging drivers

VACAVILLE – Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) announced today that she will host a workshop Friday, April 7th on California’s licensing laws and their effect on older drivers.

At the event, representatives for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will discuss the DMV’s licensing process for senior drivers. Other topics to be covered include recent changes instituted to accommodate senior drivers.

Wolk says she was inspired to hold the workshop after reading about a 2005 Area Agency on Aging survey in which Solano County seniors cited transportation as a major concern.

“For many seniors, a license means independence and access to vital health and community resources,” said Wolk.  “Given this fact, it is understandable how concerned many seniors in our community are about their ability to retain a driver’s license and to operate a car safely.”

In addition to hearing from the DMV participants will receive information about senior transit options in Solano County and local AARP-sponsored driving courses—the successful completion of which can lead to a lower insurance bill for senior drivers.

“With the baby boomer generation approaching their golden years, we can anticipate a tremendous jump in the number of senior drivers on the road,” said Wolk.  “This generation of seniors will be the most mobile ever.  They will need to know as much as possible about how our state’s laws affect their ability to get around.”

The workshop will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Vacaville McBride Senior Center, located at 91 Town Square Place in downtown Vacaville. The event is free and open to the public. Those interested in participating are invited to call (707) 455-8025 for more information.
