Wolk requests aid for Solano County flood victims

Assemblywoman calls on Governor to seek federal funds

SACRAMENTO–Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) today called on Governor Schwarzeneggar to formally ask the federal government to provide financial aid to assist recovery efforts in Solano County, which was hit hard by recent rains and subsequent flooding.

In her letter, Wolk thanked the Governor for including Solano County in the State Emergency proclamation that gave county residents and business owners access to public assistance and emergency coordination, and “expedited the significant rehabilitation that must get underway.”

But more financial help for flood victims is needed to supplement state and local efforts, she said, and that means the federal government.

“There is more that you can do to fight for those Solano County residents facing long-term displacement—and significant financial hardship—due to the destruction of their homes and other possessions,” she wrote. “Hundreds of residents cannot return home due to property damage rendering their homes uninhabitable, with many relying solely on temporary housing vouchers that will expire by the end of the week. These people will have very few options for food and shelter when this occurs.

“Specifically, I respectfully request you take the additional required steps to make sure Solano County receives a Presidential Declaration of a Major Disaster, which would provide individual homeowners financial assistance and ensure our community receives the federal aid it needs to get back on its feet.  Clearly, the amount of damage sustained is far beyond what most of our citizens will be able to pay and the state and local funding, while substantial, simply is not enough to make everyone financially whole.”

In the letter, Wolk also pledged her “full support” for the Governor’s flood recovery efforts, offering her assistance in aiding victims of the flood, which local and State disaster personnel estimate damaged up to 2,000 Solano County homes and caused more than $60 million in damage.
