| SACRAMENTO Legislation passed out of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee yesterday with amendments by Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) that would secure funding for important Yolo and Solano County parks, water, and environmental cleanup projects.
The amendments included funding for $100 million for mercury contamination, $200 million for Integrated Regional Water Management projects, and $30 million for wetland and watershed projects related to the Pacific Flyway, such as the Yolo Wildlife Area. “Mercury remediation, water management and the Pacific Flyway are all central environmental issues to the people of my district,” said Assemblywoman Wolk. “I’m glad I was able to add funding to aid the good work being done by great people in the region.” Senate Bill 153 by Senator Wes Chesbro (D-Arcata) would place a measure on the November ‘06 ballot that would enact the California Clean Water, Safe Neighborhoods and Coastal Protection Act of 2006 (Act), which would provide bond funds for parks, open space, and the environmental preservation. In addition, the bond would provide funding for neighborhood and regional parks, as well as athletic fields and trees for Cities involved with urban forestry. The bill also includes funding for agriculture and habitat easements. “The addition of amendments made this good bill even better,” concluded Wolk. The bill will next be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Should it pass to the floor, it will require a 2/3 vote to be placed on the ballot. |
