Wolk commends Attorney General for Marsh spill settlement

SACRAMENTO–– Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) announced her support today for the settlement agreement reached by the Attorney General and Solano County District Attorney, Dave Paulson, with Kinder Morgan Energy Partners over the spill that released 103,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the Suisun Marsh last April.

"The settlement agreement sends a clear message that corporate negligence will not be tolerated in Solano County. It should not take a spill of 103,000 gallons of diesel for a pipeline company to revamp its inspection procedures.”

In response to Kinder Morgan’s failure to report the spill in a timely manner, Wolk introduced a measure last year requiring pipeline owners to immediately report accidental discharges to the proper authorities. The bill, AB 1408, which was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger and went into effect earlier this year, also requires an assessment of all California pipelines.

“I believe this settlement money, in conjunction with last year’s pipeline bill, will go a long way toward preventing future disasters. But we must remember that in the end no amount of money could have replaced the precious natural habitat nearly destroyed by Kinder Morgan’s neglect.”
