Assemblywoman Wolk announces Assembly Fellowship Applications

College Graduates Encouraged to Apply to Prestigious Legislative Fellowship

VACAVILLE - Assemblymember Wolk (D-Davis) today announced that her office has applications for the 2005-2006 Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship. The application deadline is February 23, 2005.

"This program, which is sponsored by the Center for California Studies at California State University Sacramento, is an excellent opportunity for students or others to gain firsthand knowledge of the California Legislature," Wolk said. "I want to encourage anyone in my district who has a strong interest in public policy and politics to apply for this exciting program."

The Jesse Marvin Unruh Fellowship Program, founded in 1957 by the legendary former Assembly Speaker Jesse Unruh and renamed in his honor in 1987, is one of the most prestigious legislative fellowship programs in the nation. Each year, 18 college graduates are selected for the program from an international applicant pool. Assembly Fellows spend 11 months gaining firsthand knowledge of the California Legislature by working in Sacramento as staff to a legislative committee or an Assemblymember. Their duties are similar to those of legislative assistants and consultants, including, among other things, developing and researching legislative proposals, responding to constituent requests, analyzing bills, and writing speeches and press releases.

Fellowship applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree by October of the fellowship year. The program pays a monthly stipend of $1,972, plus health, dental, and vision benefits. Applications are available at Assemblymember Wolk's Capitol office and her district office in downtown Vacaville. Applicants may also file online at http://www.csus.edu/calst/assembly/.
