Assemblywoman and Business Groups Team Up with Holiday Donations |
Partnerships with community groups yield Thanksgiving feasts for those in need |
| VACAVILLE - Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) announced today she will distribute hundreds of turkeys and gift certificates good for food to local homeless shelters, food banks, and the American Legion in support of their efforts to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving Day and throughout the year. "During this time of year, when we are remembering all we have to be thankful for, it's important to remember those who are less fortunate," Wolk said. "And it's also important to remember the service organizations who work everyday of the year on behalf of those in need." This year's recipients are the Yolo and Solano County food banks; the Interfaith Council, an organization serving local homeless shelters including Fairfield's Heather House and Vacaville's Opportunity House; and Vacaville's American Legion Post 165 & Auxiliary. The holiday season presents an especially hard time of the year for local charities due to increased requests for assistance. The Thanksgiving feasts were paid for through donations from the California Water Association, the Safeway Foundation, and the California Grocers Association. "Thank you to the Water Association, Safeway, and the Grocers Association for graciously demonstrating their dedication to our community's needs," Wolk said. Safeway Inc., through its Safeway and Vons Foundations, has a strong tradition of supporting the communities where it serves customers and operates stores. Each year, the Safeway and Vons Foundations contribute more than $100 million to support local food banks, education programs, breast and prostate cancer research and other worthy charitable causes. In 2004, the Safeway and Vons Foundation, along with Safeway employees and customers, raised more than $8 million to help in the fight against prostate and breast cancer and another $2 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Wolk invites anyone interested in learning how they can make a charitable donation to one of these groups to call her district office at (707) 455-8025. |
